Cardstock Paper: Paper Crafters’ Staple

“Mom please buy me such a paper, which I can make a calendar from,” shouted my 5-year old sweetheart after coming back home from his friend’s place.

But I, not much aware about variety of stationery items being an uninterested person about crafts and all since childhood, was not known about any such paper. However seeing my kid’s interest in creating his own calendar, I forced myself to take interest in that. And as the first step of it, I started searching a paper that would be convenient for my 5-year old to handle and create the best of what he wants.

My search ended me on cardstock paper, a paper thicker and sturdier than that of the regular paper. Hence, crafts made using this paper are distinguished and appealing in look. Also, they last longer. Moreover, it is called as the staple of paper crafters. This is why, I found this as the best paper for my toddler’s little to-be-calendar.

I made a profound research on this type of paper as I hadn’t have any idea about any such paper before, though I might have seen it thousands of time. My research gave me every tid-bit of card stock paper; right from its types to the projects and techniques that can be tried with it.

To my amazement, I found that cardstock is available in thousands of shades, variety of structures and textures. Out of so many types, I chose just five types of card stock papers for the tiniest and cutest calendar my kid wanted to make to mark his friends’ birthdays and his other important days.

I picked:

Textured - A unique textured card stock paper made up of variety of fibers.

Glossy – A cardstock paper having shiny, lustrous coating.

Glitter – A card stock with a coating of colored glitter.

Matte – A cardstock that has lusterless coating.

Iridescent – An eye-catching card stock paper with a coating that displays a spectrum of colors. Its color changes as per the observer's position.

Scrapbooking is one of the best hobbies to learn or to get engaged in. It is a fun hobby that lets you preserve your favorite memories and keepsakes. So, if you have also been bitten by the scrapbooking bug then you are sure to put a large dent in your wallet. Because, scrapbooking materials from paper to embellishments can be pricey if you want to be so creative for it. However, relief can be in site if you have a nice binder and some blank card stock papers.
Find some cost-effective steps to make scrapbook -

1. Gather all materials like card stock, binder and binder sleeves, all of which should be of the same size. Like, if you prefer 8x10 binder, then use 8x10 binder sleeve and similarly 8x10 piece of cardstock. Besides, number of sleeves and pieces of cardstock paper you need will vary on how large you wish to make your scrapbook. Bear in mind that binders come in many different sizes from 1/4 inch to 5 inches deep. So, choose the depth accordingly.

2. Now, pick one piece of cardstock paper and place it on your work area. Make your page using the colored and patterned scrapbook paper, mementos, photographs and embellishments that enhance the look and fits in with your style. Keep in mind that to slide the embellishments easily into the sleeve keep them relatively flat. Glue everything into place.

3. Insert scrapbook page into binder sleeve. The sleeve comes complete with an area that is punched appropriately for your binder. Alternatively, place the sleeve into the binder. Then, repeat the process until all your pages are complete and inserted into the binder.

4. Lastly, create a cover. You can do this by including a clear plastic flap on the front cover where you can insert a cover page. Create a cover page using another piece of card stock paper. Keep it simple with flat embellishments. Then, eventually insert the cover page behind the flap carefully.

Versatility of Cardstock Paper For Card Making

You have probably heard the excitement about cardstock paper? What this excitement is all for? What are these cardstock papers exactly are? Well it basically refers to a range of fairly thick and heavy weight papers used in greeting cards, invitations, postcards, scrapbooks, making business cards and catalog covers. The main features that distinguish a sheet of card stock from other types of papers are weight, texture, color and finish.

Moreover, when looking for a more durable end-product, card stock paper with large variety of colors and textures is the obvious choice. Also, card stock paper is the perfect choice when finished product requires more durability than a standard printer paper. It is an ideal option for direct mail marketing purpose, as this paper is sturdy enough to withstand the journey from post office to home mailbox.

Sometimes, I caught in trouble finding a birthday card that really can express what I want to say to the recipient. Therefore, I usually buy blank card stock paper so that I can create greeting cards by my own. I love making my own creative and decorative greeting cards. On card stock sheet I can add personal photos, or also draw sketches and scan it into the computer. I can do most of the fun things with these papers like choosing my own fonts and place the text the way I want.

How to do the layout? It is a real challenge, as when I print and fold the card, the front, inside, and back should be in the right place. I usually try a demo on the regular paper, before I put the good cardstock in and go for the final copy.

The most exciting thing about blank cardstock paper is that when it is folded precisely in the center, it is almost similar to the store-bought greeting card. I even design a small logo on the back of the card to make it look more professional.

So, don't forget to buy a card stock paper while planning to make professional-looking self-made cards!!!
